Banjul, The Gambia – The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) in collaboration with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and support from Open Society Foundations (OSF); Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel ((UNOWAS) will host the forum on the participation of the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the 79th ordinary session of the ACHPR in Banjul.
The theme for this year’s forum is THE YEAR OF EDUCATION: “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa”
The participants would be drawn from representatives from African Civil Society Organizations, and International NGOs from Africa and beyond working on democracy, rule of law, governance, human rights, peace and security, and the pool of resource persons will also provide much-needed expertise in the panels.
Objective: The objectives of the Forum are to share updates on the human rights situation in Africa by the African and International NGO community to identify responses as well as adopt strategies for the promotion and protection of human rights in the continent. Additionally, the Forum seeks to strengthen cooperation among NGOs operating within the African Commission and other human rights mechanisms throughout Africa.
What to Expect: In-depth Insights: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the state of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Africa through thought-provoking discussions and presentations.
Network and Partner: Forge meaningful connections and collaborative partnerships with fellow participants and stakeholders, further enhancing the impact of your work.
Thematic Focuses: The forum will focus on equal access to education for sustainable development; unconstitutional changes of government; human rights education in Africa; access to digital technology in Africa; democracy and the rule of law; civic engagement and freedom of assembly; protection of human rights defenders; and conflict and political instability in Africa.
Expected Outcomes: To document general trends and situation of education, human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Africa; networking and partnership building with and amongst participants/stakeholders; report on the special interest groups; adopt recommendations and resolutions where necessary to highlight them at the opening of the 79th Ordinary Session and report of the NGOs Forum.
