What You Need to Know About the NGO Forum

The NGO Forum is one of the most important platforms for civil society engagement in Africa’s human rights landscape. Organized by the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS), the Forum brings together hundreds of human rights defenders, activists, and civil society organizations from across the continent and beyond.

Held ahead of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) Ordinary Session, the NGO Forum provides a space for civil society to:

  • Share information and experiences on human rights situations and advocacy efforts across Africa.
  • Develop strategies and common positions on key human rights, democracy, and governance issues.
  • Engage directly with the African Commission and other regional and international human rights mechanisms.

Over the years, the NGO Forum has become a vibrant platform for dialogue, policy influence, and coalition-building. It covers a wide range of themes, from climate justice, freedom of expression, women’s and children’s rights, to peace, security, and digital rights.

The outcomes of the Forum, including resolutions and recommendations, are presented to the African Commission for consideration during its public session. This ensures that civil society voices are reflected in the continental human rights agenda.

As we prepare for the upcoming session, the ACDHRS invites all stakeholders, NGOs, youth groups, community-based organizations, and human rights advocates to actively participate and contribute to shaping Africa’s human rights future.

This year’s Forum is expected to bring together over 250 participants from across the continent. The event will take place from 17th to 19th October 2025 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Banjul, The Gambia.

Stay connected with us for updates on thematic discussions and outcomes of the Forum. Together, we continue to strengthen democracy, promote accountability, and advance human rights in Africa.
