The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (ACDHRS) joins the Judiciary of The Gambia, the legal fraternity, and the people of The Gambia in honouring and celebrating Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow as he prepares to retire on 1 August 2026, bringing to a close nearly five decades of distinguished service to the law and public life.
Chief Justice Jallow’s career has been defined by dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice, the rule of law, and human rights. His service to The Gambia and the wider African continent has left an enduring mark on the legal and human rights landscape.
For ACDHRS, his contribution is deeply personal and forms an important part of the Centre’s own history.
Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow played a foundational role in the establishment of ACDHRS in 1989 and went on to serve as the Centre’s very first Chairperson. His leadership during those formative years helped lay the foundation for an institution that has, over the decades, grown into a respected African voice for human rights, democracy, and civic space.
His connection with the Centre has remained strong over the years. Today, he continues to serve as a member of the ACDHRS Council of Elders, offering the Centre the benefit of his immense experience, wisdom, and guidance.
At ACDHRS, we are deeply proud of Chief Justice Jallow’s place in our history. From helping to establish the Centre and providing its first leadership, to continuing to guide us as a member of the Council of Elders, his contribution to ACDHRS spans generations and remains an important part of our institutional legacy.
As he takes leave of the Judiciary, we celebrate not only his distinguished career but also his enduring contribution to the values and principles that have shaped his life’s work.
