Advancing Human Rights, Democracy and Justice for All Africans
On the occasion of African Human Rights Day, the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) joins the African Union, human rights institutions, civil society organisations, human rights defenders and people across the continent in reaffirming our collective commitment to the promotion, protection and fulfilment of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all.
This day provides an important opportunity to reflect on Africa’s progress in advancing human dignity, equality, justice and the rule of law, while recognising the persistent challenges that continue to undermine the enjoyment of human rights across the continent. Armed conflicts, shrinking civic space, restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, gender-based violence, discrimination, forced displacement and violations against human rights defenders remain matters of serious concern. These challenges demand sustained commitment, stronger institutions and collective action from governments, regional bodies and civil society.
As an independent pan-African organisation established in 1989, ACDHRS remains committed to strengthening democracy, promoting human rights, protecting civic space and building the capacity of civil society organisations and human rights defenders. Through advocacy, dialogue, capacity-building initiatives and engagement with regional human rights mechanisms, including the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, we continue to support efforts to ensure that human rights principles translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of people across Africa.
We emphasise that the protection of human rights is not solely the responsibility of governments or institutions. It requires the active participation of civil society, the media, young people, women, communities and all individuals who believe in dignity, equality and justice. Human rights defenders and civil society organisations must be able to carry out their legitimate work in safe and enabling environments, free from intimidation, harassment and reprisals.
On this African Human Rights Day, ACDHRS calls on African governments to uphold their obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, strengthen accountability and access to justice, protect fundamental freedoms, and ensure the effective implementation of regional and international human rights commitments. We also urge African institutions and development partners to sustain their support for independent civil society organisations and initiatives that advance democratic governance and respect for human rights.
ACDHRS congratulates the African Union Commission and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) on the 45th anniversary of the adoption and 40th anniversary of the entry into force of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. These milestones reaffirm Africa’s commitment to human dignity, justice and fundamental freedoms. However, their true significance lies in translating these commitments into tangible improvements in citizens’ lives. ACDHRS calls for stronger accountability, effective implementation, protection of civic space and human rights defenders, and renewed political will to ensure that every African enjoys their rights without discrimination or fear.
As Africa pursues the aspirations of Agenda 2063, human rights, democracy, peace and justice must remain central to the continent’s development. Sustainable progress cannot be achieved without accountable governance, inclusive participation, equal opportunities and the protection of the dignity of every person.
ACDHRS reaffirms its commitment to working with partners and communities across Africa to build a continent where human rights are respected, democracy is strengthened, justice is accessible and no one is left behind.
Human rights are not privileges to be granted; they are fundamental entitlements that must be respected, protected and fulfilled.
Happy African Human Rights Day!
