The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) joins the global community in commemorating International Youth Day, a moment to celebrate the energy, creativity, and resilience of young people, while reaffirming our commitment to empowering them as active agents of positive change.
This year’s theme, “Youth Driving Change for People and the Planet”, resonates deeply with our mission to promote democracy, human rights, and sustainable development across Africa. In an era marked by pressing challenges, from climate change and economic inequality to threats against human rights, youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are leaders today.
Over the years, ACDHRS has trained and equipped many young people across Africa in various components of human rights, including democracy, environmental rights, gender equality, and civic participation. These initiatives have helped strengthen youth leadership, amplify their voices, and build their capacity to influence change in their communities and beyond.
We recognize the vital role young Africans play in shaping inclusive societies, defending democratic values, advocating for gender equality, promoting environmental stewardship, and holding leaders accountable. At the same time, we acknowledge the obstacles they face, including limited access to quality education, decent employment, civic space, and decision-making platforms.
ACDHRS calls on governments, civil society, and development partners to expand opportunities for meaningful youth participation in governance, policy-making, and community development. There is a need to invest in education, skills, and innovation that prepare young people for the evolving demands of the 21st century, safeguard human rights and civic freedoms to ensure youth voices can be expressed without fear or repression, and support youth-led climate action and environmental initiatives that advance sustainable futures for Africa and the world.
On this International Youth Day, we reaffirm our belief that a just, peaceful, and sustainable Africa is only possible when young people are empowered, protected, and included. Together, let us ensure that their rights are upheld, their voices are heard, and their potential is fully realized.
Happy International Youth Day!
