The African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) joins the global community in commemorating the 25th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
Adopted in October 2000, Resolution 1325 remains a landmark commitment recognizing the vital role of women in preventing conflict, promoting peace, and rebuilding societies. Twenty-five years on, the call for women’s meaningful participation in peace and security processes remains as urgent as ever.
As a regional organization, ACDHRS reaffirms its commitment to advancing gender equality and amplifying the voices of women and girls across Africa. We recognize the continued challenges women face in conflict and post-conflict settings, including gender-based violence and exclusion from decision-making spaces.
We therefore call on African governments, regional bodies, and all stakeholders to renew their commitments to the full implementation of UNSCR 1325 and its subsequent resolutions. Investing in women’s leadership, ensuring protection from violence, and promoting inclusive governance are not only obligations, they are essential pathways to sustainable peace and development in Africa.
On this milestone anniversary, ACDHRS stands in solidarity with all women peacebuilders who continue to shape a more just, equitable, and peaceful world.
