Statement by the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) on The Gambia Becoming the First Member State to Ratify the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AUCEVAWG)

01/07/2026

The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) commends the Government and people of The Gambia for becoming the first country to ratify the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AUCEVAWG).

This historic milestone reflects The Gambia’s strong commitment to advancing the rights, dignity, and protection of women and girls and represents a significant contribution to Africa’s collective efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

AWLN applauds the leadership of the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Hon. Fatou Kinteh, and the unanimous support of the National Assembly in achieving this landmark accomplishment. AWLN also acknowledges the invaluable leadership of Hon. Commissioner Janet R. Sallah-Njie, Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa (ACHPR), whose steadfast advocacy has been instrumental in advancing the AUCEVAWG across the continent.

The Network also extends its heartfelt congratulations to the AWLN Gambia Chapter for its continued leadership, advocacy, and commitment to advancing the rights of women and girls.

The ratification of this Convention sends a powerful message that ending violence against women and girls remains central to the realization of the African Union’s aspirations for inclusive development, peace, security, and social justice.

AWLN encourages all Member States to accelerate the ratification and implementation of the Convention and to strengthen efforts to prevent and respond to all forms of violence against women and girls.
